How to use Krub and Ka in Thai language?

Sawasdee , Túk kon sà-baai dee măi

Did you notice that Thai people always end their sentences with 'Krub' or 'Ka'?

What is the differences between 'Krub' and 'Ka'?

And why Thai people need to end the sentences with those words and how to use them?

Let’s follow kru Vee, our Thai instructor to find out! Watch the video here 👇

In Thai language, there are many ending particles for you to choose. The most common words are ‘Krub’ and ‘Ka’, these words cannot be directly translated into English or Chinese. Thai people will use ‘Krub’ or ‘Ka’ regularly at the end of the sentences to make the sentences more polite.

  • ‘Krub’ (ครับ) is the polite ending particle for males. You can also use the word ‘Kub’ to end the sentences as well. ‘Krub’ or ‘Kub’ can be used for both statement and question sentences.

  • ‘Ka’ (ค่ะ/คะ) is the polite ending particle for females. There is a slightly different tone when you pronounce your ‘Ka’Kâ / ค่ะ with the falling tone will use for statement sentences and Ká / คะ with the high tone will use for questions.

How to use Krub and Ka?

Imagine you are going into a cafe to grab your morning coffee. To create a good first impression, give you a respect and be more polite, the staff will say ‘ao ga fe mai krub/ka’ (เอากาแฟไหมครับ/คะ) instead of just saying ‘ao ga fe mai’ (เอากาแฟไหม) which may sound rude for the first meeting between you and the staff.

However, ‘ao ga fe mai krub/ka’ and ‘ao ga fe mai’ both sentences mean ‘Do you want a coffee?’. What makes the difference is the ending particles, 'Krub' and 'Ka', which make the sentences become courteous.

Is it necessary to use Krub and Ka?

In fact, it depends on the situations, you add 'Krub' and 'Ka' at the end of the sentences whenever you want to sound more polite.

For example, when you are encountering with the strangers, talking to the public, speaking with elder people and having a business meeting.

And in some way, 'Krub' and 'Ka' can be left when you are chatting with your friends and family to show the familiarity.

Even the polite ending particles are not a must, we would encourage Thai language learners to use it more often. As to help you get used to Thai language and pronunciation, also, 'Krub' and 'Ka' will express the politeness from the speaker.

Learning language will lead you to discover the culture and people.
